A sustainable celebration

As a city that prides itself on leading the way in environmental change, the City of Adelaide is focussed on running more sustainable events. Join us as we reduce single-use plastics and better manage our waste streams to look after our environment. Our goal is to enjoy more sustainable events now and into the future!

The last straw!

We will continue our mission to reduce single-use plastic waste by being a single-use plastic straw-free event.

If you do require a straw - there will be a limited supply of appropriate straws available from vendors upon request. Any straws offered by vendors will be compostable via the green bins or other eco-friendly alternatives.

We encourage you to pledge your support by sharing a picture of your ‘straw-free’ drinks on Instagram using #StrawFreeADL.

As part of our journey to reduce single use plastic at events, we have also committed to a balloon-free event.

If you bought it – green bin it

All food packaging from our food vendors at this year’s New Year’s Eve event will again be compostable and can be deposited in the green organics bins onsite. This ensures the materials can be processed into valuable nutrient rich compost to grow more quality, South Australian produce.

For revellers bringing their own food from home, we encourage you to bring reusable containers. For all disposable packaging brought to the event there will be a three-bin waste system – one for compostable waste, one for recyclable items and the other for landfill.

Volunteers will be on hand to help guide anyone who is unsure of which bin to use.

BYO reusable water bottles

Water stations will be set up around the event offering free drinking water for you to fill up your reusable water bottles. This will save you the hassle of having to line-up and pay for water and ensures you stay hydrated to enjoy the event. Even better, think of all the single-use plastic bottles not being used!

Take a free-ride

There are plenty of ways to make your way into the city for the event, but some of the most environmentally friendly and convenient options to get you close to the action are to ride your bike or catch public transport.

Bike riders can park their bikes in special bike-rack stations located throughout the event grounds.

Adelaide Metro will be offering free public transport in and out of the city all day New Year's Eve until approximately 6 am the following morning. Free transport will be available on trams, trains and buses. You could even drive part of the way and catch public transport from a Park ‘n’ Ride location for the rest of the trip. Check out the Adelaide Metro website for Park ‘n’ Ride details, event routes and timetables.

Driving in?

If you own an electric vehicle and are considering driving in, conveniently located UPark Wyatt, UPark Topham and UPark Rundle all house electric vehicle charging stations. The first hour of charging is free!

Another option if you need to drive in is to car pool. Find out if any of your friends are heading into the city and share the festive fun by travelling in together
