Sir Thomas Elder
Alfred Drury
This bronze sculpture honours Sir Thomas Elder who was the University's most generous benefactor and was gifted to the university by public subscription. He was a wealthy businessman, pastoralist and parliamentarian whose bequest amounted to £100 000 which was a massive sum in the 1800s. His money contributed to the creation of academic positions in science, medicine and mathematics, and establishing the Elder Conservatorium of Music. The statue is located outside Elder Hall.
