The Adelaide born Sir Mark Oliphant was a physicist who discovered the nuclei of Helium 3 and Tritium could create nuclear fusion the basis for the hydrogen bomb. He worked on the Manhattan Project in America but was 'absolutely appalled at what it had done to human beings' and spoke out about nuclear weapons. He was also governor of South Australia from 1971 to 1976.
