Oxford Hotel, O'Connell Street, North Adelaide c1884

The Oxford Hotel, on the north-west corner of O'Connell Street and Tynte Street, was established as the Princess Royal Hotel in 1859. It changed it's name to the Oxford in 1884 when it was rebuilt. William Allen was the licensee from 1884 to 1886.

'Adelaide, Friday evening.
Burglaries in the city and suburbs are becoming alarmingly prevalent lately. Early on Friday morning the Oxford hotel, North Adelaide, was broken into and over £10 taken.

During Thursday night the [St. Peters] Cathedral entrance doors were forced open and the building completely overhauled. The previous night there was a welcome service to the Bishop and the thieves, probably thought there would be a big collection, but they were disappointed as the money was taken away after the service. '
