Aurora Hotel, Pirie Street, 1938

Aurora Hotel, north-east corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square. It was first known as the Black Eagle from the 29th June, 1859, then had several name changes, including the Marquis of Queensbury (1891-1894), until 1894 when it was named the Aurora. It traded under that name until the 1st December, 1983 when it was demolished.

The plan to demolish the building led to one of the most controversial heritage debates of the 1980s.

Music, song, and anecdote interspersed with reminiscences of many a stirring battle on the football field rejuvenated all. Future reunions will be looked forward to with even greater zest. From the outset success was assured. Long before 8 o'clock happy groups of men assembled outside the meeting place. Veterans for the most part did not need to be introduced. They recognised their associates of the past instantly, and many were the handshakes. The majority had not seen each other for 10 or 20 years…”
