On the south east corner of Flinders Street and Ackland Street. This photograph was taken from across Flinders Street looking down Ackland Street. Established in 1851 as the Norwich Arms Inn, at 203 Flinders Street, it became the Oakfield in 1879. Closed in 1963. Demolished as part of Frome Road project of the 1960s. Ackland Street itself was part of this project and no longer exists.

'Girl Rescued In Hotel Fire
When she was overcome by smoke while sleeping in her room at the Oakfield Hotel, Flinders street, city, at 2 a.m. yesterday. Miss Jean Hill waitress, was carried from the room to safety by the hotel manager (Mr. S. Green). The fire was caused by an iron which had been inadvertently switched on, and which set fire to linen. A table and a sewing machine were also damaged. Hotel guests helped Mr. Green and Mr. Ken Clarke head barman, put out the fire, which filled the building with smoke. Constables Ryan, of Magill, and Rann, of HQ police, have prepared a report.'
