Aurora Hotel, Hindmarsh Square, 1912

Photo taken 16 May 1912

State Library Catalogue Reference: B 1799

Aurora Hotel, north-east corner of Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square. In May, 1912 when this photo was taken, the licensee was Henry Gepp. It was first known as the Black Eagle from the 29th June, 1859, then had several name changes, including the Marquis of Queensbury (1891-1894), until 1894 when it was named the Aurora. It traded under that name until the 1st December, 1983 when it was demolished. The plan to demolish the building led to one of the most controversial heritage debates of the 1980s.

'NO DRINK FOR BOARDERS
Nelson Fuller, licence of the Aurora Hotel, who was fined £5 with 15/ costs for having unlawfully supplied liquor on September 11, said that he was not aware that he could not serve a boarder with drinks.'
