Hotel Orient, corner of Pulteney Street and Wakefield Street, 1939

The north-east corner of Wakefield and Pulteney Streets, Adelaide, April 7th 1939. Built on the site of the Rose of Australia Hotel in 1863, the building still stands and is used as backpacker accommodation. From December 1883 to March 1884 it was known as the La Mascott Hotel.

“Three Fined For After-Hours Hotel Breaches
For having carried away liquor from the Orient Hotel, Wakefield street, City, at 9.5 p.m. on January 25. John Rosin, hotel employee of Robsart street, Parkside, was fined £10 with 10/ costs in the Adelaide Police Court today. Allan Reginald Johncock, postal clerk, of Cowandilla road, Cowandilla, was fined £5 with 10/ costs for having unlawfully obtained liquor. The licensee, Elizabeth Alexander, was fined £5 with 12/6 costs for having carried liquor to persons, outside the premises of which she was licensee.”
