Hampshire Hotel, Grote Street, c1875

The Hampshire Hotel was established in 1856, and was possibly known as the Coach House Tavern at that time (Hoad, p218). The hotel was rebuilt in 1911. Continued to trade until the 2000s when it traded intermittently. As of 2018 it is a restaurant. Robert Cock was the licensee from 1873 to 1882.

'A correspondent says:—"Between 1 and 2 o'clock on Tuesday morning a large stone was hurled through one of the bar windows of the Hampshire Hotel, Grote-street, knocking over a suspended lamp in its course, and striking the opposite shelf with great violence. The offender then proceeded to the recently-erected house occupied by Mr. Ellershaw, and broke 'a very large square of glass in like manner. Some other of the neighbors were also similarly served, and in one case the shattered glass fell upon the children in bed. It is time some police protection was afforded in the neighborhood."
