Crown Inn Hotel and Shipping Newspapers Building, Currie Street, 1935

The Crown Inn, on the north-west corner of Currie Street and Rosina Street, was established in 1846 as the Golden Fleece Inn. Name changes included Coronation (1937-1979), Hotel California (1979-1984), Armstrong's Tavern (1984-1987), and finally the College Arms in conjunction with Adelaide TAFE College. The building has been demolished. The Shipping Newspapers Limited building was erected in 1934.

'Alexander George Hillwood, of the Crown Inn, Currie Street was committed for trial by Mr L. H. Haslam. S.M.recently, on a charge of having set fire to furniture and fittings in the saloon bar of the hotel with intent to defraud the West Australian Insurance Co. Ltd. Bail was fixed at £100. Hillwood, in evidence, said that neither he nor his wife would benefit from setting light to the premises. If the place had been destroyed their loss would have been about £7000. It would have been easy for anyone to secrete himself in the hotel premises before 6 o'clock at night. Customers at the hotel included a rough element, to which he had refused at times to grant favors.'
