A Victorian Landscape
Brougham Gardens / Tantutitingga (Park 29)
Did you know that Brougham Gardens is a typical Victorian landscape?
While the layout of the roads through the gardens has changed significantly from Colonel Light's plan, the gardens retain their Victorian character. This can be seen from the plantings of palms dating from the 1890s (which were donated by Sir Samuel Way), the axial pathway system and the mansions which line the gardens to take advantage of the views all overlooked by the Brougham Place Uniting Church on the western side.
In 1972 Aboriginal people established a tent embassy in Brougham Gardens in support of the embassy on the grounds of Parliament House in Canberra. As part of Council's reconciliation with the local Kaurna people, all parks in the Park Lands have Kaurna names.
Tantutitingga means native lilac place in the Kaurna language and is a sign of hope.
Due to the proximity of the Woman's and Children's Hospital, this name was given to these gardens.
