The city guide to fireplaces

In town for a show, a match at the Adelaide Oval or just looking for a cosy spot to unwind after work? Wood-fired and gas, the city’s packed with places where you can finish the day in front of a toasty fireplace. Here's an introduction to three of our favourites and where to find fireplaces throughout the city.

The British Hotel

58 Finniss Street, North Adelaide SA 5006

The British Hotel has been quenching thirsts since 1838 and hold claims to one of the oldest hotel licenses in South Australia. This gorgeous heritage pub has not one but three cosy fireplaces. Nestle in for the night with a cheese platter and a glass of red for the perfect evening.

Roxie's

188 Grenfell Street, Adelaide SA 5000

Don’t let the weather keep you from enjoying the outdoors. Head to the East End and pull up a chair in front of the open wood fire in Roxie’s plant-filled garden bar & eatery. The earthy tones of the red-brick walls against the lush greenery thriving throughout this popular East End meeting place, creates an atmosphere that’s rustic, fresh and fun.

Queen's Head Hotel

117 Kermode St, North Adelaide SA 5006

Raise a toast to the past when you stop into this history-laden watering hole and warm up by one of its three gas fireplaces – the big one in the rear courtyard or the two smaller ones inside.

First opened in 1838, this is South Australia’s oldest hotel, although the façade you see today is from a rebuilding in 1881. The contemporary interior sports stylish brick and marble and from wood-oven pizzas to full service restaurant dining there’s food choices aplenty.

The Jade

142 – 160 Flinders St, Adelaide SA 5000

Located inside the iconic St Paul’s Rectory, The Jade has long been a mecca for local music lovers: whether you like being on stage or a face in the crowd.

In the cooler months, there’s little more tempting than taking getting comfy on the well-worn tan leather couch or one of the single-seaters in front of their roaring open wood fire. There’s also a second fireplace in the adjacent dining area if you want some amped up atmosphere mid-meal.
