Return of the deli: city cafes selling pantry goods

Last updated 06 Sept, 2021

Got milk? Bread? A slab of brownie? Some small businesses in Adelaide are flexing to offer pantry items in place of eat-in options while COVID-19 restrictions are in place. Here are some highlights of what’s on offer.

Best pick: When you're in a jam

Sibling coffee

A little strategy around food shelf-life is a good idea at the moment but your pantry can go beyond beans. The Sibling team have a selection of incredible house made jams, kimchi, pickles and krauts to make your fifth sandwich of the week just that bit more exciting.

Best pick: Lounge room picnic

Leigh Street Wine Room

Eating on the floor is considered adventurous only if you have an awesome picnic spread. The best kind of picnic is one you don’t have to pack yourself so leave it to the Leigh Street Wine Room team to put together a deluxe picnic pack of the best cured meats, olives, bread, other treats and, of course, a bottle of wine.

Best pick: Home café experience

Cafe Troppo

No need to 'um' and 'ah' about what to put in your basket, the team at Troppo have saved you the trouble and bundled boxes for every occasion – recreating a non-iso weekend brunch? A pizza and curry night? They have you covered.

Best pick: Bon appétit

You know it’s fancy when you don’t recognise the dry pasta names (Chifferi? Reginette?). Whatever it is, it’s bound to go really well with the dry aged duck prosciutto and Stem's house made sauce you’ve also added to your cart.

Best pick: Nonna in your kitchen

Exchange Specialty Coffee

The Exchange team still have one of the widest varieties of coffee beans in the city but they’re also serving take home packs of nonna’s sauce, meatballs, mushrooms, brownie slabs as well as your staple milk, alt milks and bread.

Best pick: Simply heart warming

Where We Met

A quick visit to the south side café shows they have strong appreciation and bond with their local suppliers. The Tweedvale milk, Earth eggs, Mylor bakery bread and Dawn Patrol coffee for sale at the Where We Met pantry comes direct from each producer – and it shows!

Best pick: Literally anything you'll ever need

Adelaide Central Market

If your pantry needs are a little more extensive, you can order everything from the Adelaide Central Market. If you’d prefer not to go into the market you can pre-order from your favourite stalls and collect all at once at the market’s new touch-free drive-through service on Tuesdays and Fridays.

If you can’t quite make the drive, delivery is an option from many stores including SA produce merchants, Wills and Daniel who deliver for free on orders over $50. They can include more than just the produce they stock in-store too – meat, seafood, dairy and even toiletries can be supplied all in one go. Best of all, it's all SA made.
